‘We were dying to do it’: Inside Keir Starmer’s move to purge Jeremy Corbyn from Labour
Mr Corbyn accused him of a “flagrant attack on the democratic rights” of his constituents and hinted he planned to stand as an independent MP.
Stating his intention to “be very clear” about his predecessor’s future, Sir Keir said: “What I said about the party changing meant we are not going back and that is why Jeremy Corbyn will not stand as a Labour candidate at the next general election.” Sir Keir’s warning was met by a wall of silence from many of Mr Corbyn’s political allies in the party – with MPs contacted declining to comment.
Mr Corbyn himself hit back at Sir Keir’s “divisive” actions and stressed it was up to Labour member in Islington North who their candidate is.
