Why frustration over a lack of radical policies from Keir Starmer could let in Green Party co-leader Carla Denyer
projected results on a seat-by-seat basis
“If I were anywhere else in the country I would vote Labour,” said a local voter. “But because we have a real chance of getting a Green MP in Bristol I will be voting for them. I also don’t feel that Labour has served the area well, both in local government and as the constituency MP.” This coincides with boundary changes in the creation of the new constituency that, on their own, would be expected to lead to Labour’s old Bristol West majority taking a significant hit. And Starmer’s safety first positioning of Labour has only made the Greens more confident about their ability to snatch up any voters on the left of the Labour movement who might feel the party’s policy platform isn’t radical enough.
They said they were disappointed by the treatment of former Labour MPs blocked from standing – including ex-leader Jeremy Corbyn – and said they don’t believe the party is offering anything for younger voters. She said the party had been “working hard in the local area for a long time” to establish a bigger presence in Bristol.
Debbonaire knows she is fighting for every vote and has had visits from senior Labour politicians, including Starmer last week, to bolster support., that Labour’s policy platform is radical and climate-friendly and was appealing to Bristol voters and she uses the phrase ‘Green Labour’ to describe the approach.“I’m campaigning hard for every vote. I always have,” she said. “I’ve served the people and represented the people of Bristol Central for nine years.
