Lendlease has lodged plans for its biggest London project yet, turning an iconic film location and post-industrial wasteland into offices, shops and 6300 homes.
| Head east along the Thames from central London, past the Tower Bridge, and after a few bends in the river you will pass the glass towers of the Docklands district. Fast-growing Greenwich sits opposite on the southern bank, hiding behind its garish, millennium-built white dome.
Diggers, bulldozers and rollers are already at work. The site offices have been moved into position, ready for an initial batch of 38 full-time Lendlease staff to relocate there. That first phase will include the redevelopment of an extraordinary building at the heart of the site, the 10-storey Millennium Mills. A century-old former flour mill, it has brooded empty over Silvertown for about 40 years.
Silvertown is part of the Royal Docks development zone, which Mr Mayes describes as “one of the largest regeneration sites in Europe”. Newham will supply the tenants, and has about 28,000 people on its waiting list for subsidised housing. This is high, but also a pretty standard example of the pressure that London councils are under to accommodate low-income people in a high-rent town.Lendlease experienced this first-hand during its flagship project and London development debut, the £2.5 billion, 2000-home Elephant Park site near the city centre.
