Manchester City are one win away from equalling their tally from last season in the Premier League 2 - in 13 fewer games.
After winning the Premier League 2 for three years in succession, the academy found themselves rooted to the bottom of the new-look division last season as injuries and first team call-ups took hold. Only a late run of form gave the season a semblance of respectability, but four wins all season from 20 games was a severely below-par return for a supremely talented group.
Fast forward three months, and City's Elite Development Squad are one win away from levelling their tally from last season, which can be achieved in 13 fewer games. They bounced back from an opening day defeat to Liverpool - who fielded an experienced squad - and have recorded five wins in a row. "We spoke about it at the beginning of the season and said for their own careers we need to be better. We have worked really hard on the training pitch in terms of our basics and what we want to see on a matchday, in terms of giving them clarity on their roles.
"I felt like last season we were a bunch of players put into a team and we’ve never really played before," says defender Jahmai Simpson-Pusey, offering an honest assessment of last season's problems. He continued: "Last season was a shock because we weren’t getting as many wins, and a team we were thinking ‘if we play them again we could beat them’. This season, we’re used to it and know we’re only playing them once so we have to get the win."
