The advertising maverick’s crenellated Sussex mansion strives for immortality — but are a new book ‘Orgasm’ and a bid for The Daily Telegraph really part of the plan?
Lord Maurice Saatchi has sold so many things in his career that selling himself is, of course, no trouble. “Can I boast?” he asks, wearing a knee-length silk shirt and an equally audacious thin smile. The question is certainly rhetorical; it is also arguably superfluous. We are standing on the patio of his Sussex mansion, looking out at a manicured garden larger than some family farms. The view is itself a brag.
The stunning library, with a polished floor and stone staircase, contains 7,000 books, mostly her poetry and papers. Saatchi’s own collection, including a few Lenin pamphlets and illustrated philosophy books from the Introducing . . . series, is relegated to a small corner. Next door, in Hart’s study, is her old desk, looking untouchable. A more-than-life-sized statue of Hart, designed by the French sculptor Jean Cardot, looks out over the lake.
