Inside No 9's Christmas special is this year's best ghost story Review: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
got in on the tingles-down-your-nape action with an eerie special edition of their phantasmagorical anthology serieswas just what I wanted from a creepy Yuletide tale. It was unsettling without lurching into straight-up horror and – hallelujah – there was absolutely no gore. Shearsmith and Pemberton instead conjured slow-rising dread, with a dram of hysterical humour poured on top.
But there’d been a double-booking. He was interrupted from his reverie by irritatingly chatty couple Pierce and Posy . It wasn’t long before verbose church warden Dick joined them. He was, Dick recalled, a sad Santa with gentle eyes and a black tongue hanging from his jawless face. “His restless spirit roams… longing to be whole again,” he warned.
Personal tragedy plus a supernatural Santa were the perfect raw materials for a solid ghost story, and perfectly modulated performances added to the intrigue. Pemberton’s Parkway had the tetchy menace of a villain from a Hammer Horror, while the unsettlingly garrulous Callow sounded like he’d wandered in from the pub inShobna Gulati as Posy, Reece Shearsmith as Pierce, Steve Pemberton as Jasper and Simon Callow as Dick inAnd then came the final twist.
