The Met supports the use of WhatsApp by personnel but said it will root out officers and staff using the app to 'express hateful views'It’s not the first time police officers have been criticised for sharing grossly offensive messages and images – with other high profile cases also exposing cases of sexism and racism among some of the country’s biggest forces.

Where things cross into unacceptable conduct and language is murky water, says the former DCI. “It blurs the lines because WhatsApp is commonplace in people’s lives. People are used to talking openly and freely on WhatsApp with friends.” “Police officers showed a remarkable level of foolishness to think they can get away with documenting those kinds of comments,” Mr Babu told. “What struck me with the Nottingham case was the dignity and grace those families have shown. That was not shown by the police”.

“They are scaring us with WhatsApp more and more. I have a couple of friends who are teachers, they have WhatsApp groups where they slag kids off. I’d imagine there will be ones with nurses and doctors where all sorts get said, it’s crazy how they want us to live now,” he told“I get the ones where there’s pictures of bodies. But it’s gone crazy, it’s scary. What’s crazy is the bosses would all have been PCs in the 90s and early 00s and they would have been so much worse,” he continued.
