Francia Marquez invited the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to Colombia, after watching their Netflix documentary
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have embarked on the first day of their Colombian tour, warmly welcomed by their host, Vice President Francia Marquez. The VP extended an invitation to the Royal couple after being "moved" by their Netflix documentary.
Starting out as a cleaner and then a housekeeper, this inspirational lady made her name fighting for Afro-Colombian miners' rights against exploitation by international corporations in South of the country. Remarkably, she began championing these causes at just 13, and their plight was brought into national focus when Marquez organised a memorable march on Bogota after years of gruelling campaigning.
In a breathtaking twist eight years later, Marquez shocked supporters by declaring her candidacy for Vice President during a feminist conference. Her campaign promises included advocating for environmental justice and safeguarding black and indigenous populations who have historically suffered under discrimination in Colombian society.
Following a second attempt on her life post-election as Vice President, a bomb was discovered by the side of a road leading to her residence. Marquez recounted the chilling incident: "Members of my security team found a device with more than 7 kilos of explosive material on the road leading to my family home in the village of Yolombo, in Suarez, Cauca. It was destroyed in a controlled manner.
