Scotland is set to host its first ever all-electric off road rally - in the stunning setting of a disused opencast coal mine
.
The dramatic setting of Glenmuckloch - with its scarred landscape and sheer rock faces - will be the backdrop for an event which has teams backed by motorsport legends Lewis Hamilton, Nico Rosberg and Jenson Button. “When you see on the hillside there all the wind turbines, it’s a crying shame that, at the moment, when there's too much wind and the grid can't take it, they have to turn them off or the energy is wasted.
The series travels around the world - having already been to Saudi Arabia this year, with Italy next - but crucially, avoids jet-setting by transporting everything via its enormous, retrofitted cargo-passenger ship, the St Helena. Preparing to get behind the wheel is Catie Munnings, racing star and driver for the Andretti Altawkilat team - the only Brit racer taking part.
“It feels really nice to be in a championship a bit more conscious of that kind of thing, and actually, not just racing in a location with electric cars and racing sustainably, but leaving something positive behind - because a little can go a long way.”
