Sir Michael Parkinson, who passed away aged 88 on Wednesday night, had a famously good relationship with the Scots comedian, who he interviewed an incredible 14 times and once joked he'd helped 'establish' his career.
Legendary British chat show host Sir Michael Parkinson passed away aged 88 at his home on Wednesday night following a short illness.
But it was the famously good relationship the journalist had with Scottish comedian and actor Billy Connolly that may stick in the mind most for Scots. The Glasgow comic was one of Parkinson's most loved and most frequent interviewees, having between invited onto the show an astounding 14 times. The actor then went on to tell a rather risqué joke with a punchline about a Glaswegian man who murdered his wife and put her in a shallow grave with her bum poking out so he had somewhere to park his bike.
Parkinson, who the comedian fondly nicknamed as 'Parky', also seemed to butt heads with Billy's wife, Pamela Stephenson, who branded him a 'daft old fart' after the chat show host claimed that Connolly was unable to recognise some of his closest friends during an "awkward" dinner together. Describing Connolly as the "funniest guy I've ever interviewed", the chat show host joked during a 2021 interview on BBC's The One Show that he turned the then upcoming Scottish comedian into a household name overnight.
Speaking of the late American boxer, Sir Michael previously said: "When people ask me who I most enjoyed interviewing, I'm unable to give them an answer. On another occasion , Parkinson said: "I'm not going to argue with you ", to which Ali replied: "You're not as dumb as you look." The actress, who was aged 30 at the time, appeared in a low cut black dress and the talk show host made a sexist remark towards her body.
