Israelis from industries including cyber, AI and advertising abandon their day jobs to create a ‘war room’ to track hostages
The day after Hamas launched its attack on the country, it restyled itself into what it calls a war room, made up of volunteers who have abandoned their day jobs to turn their efforts towards trying to rescue the 203 hostages the militant group captured and are holding across the border in Gaza. Any matches detected are shared with the IDF’s newest unit – the task force for finding missing and displaced people.
Franco described how his half of the war room was set up in the aftermath of the attack: “We collaborated between start-ups within face recognition and business intelligence. Most importantly, we got support from giant tech companies like Google and Microsoft which are helping us now.” Meanwhile on the creative side, Israelis who usually work in advertising and the creative industries have come together under Marcus’s leadership to create awareness content.
“Most of us have our skin in the game with family or friends that are hostages in Gaza, so we are totally committed to this. It’s not professional, it’s personal. It’s very important for us because the clock is ticking and we want to make the world understand and give us the support that is needed to bring the hostages back home safely,” the head of the creative room adds.
