Sharpening the saws, 1927 by Oleksandr Bohomazov is one of the paintings that is now on display in Madrid’s Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum after being rescued from Kyiv IN MADRID – Gallery curators more used to deciding on how to hang paintings than how to outsmart the Russian army hatched a secret plan to spirit the best of Ukraine’s artistic treasures from under the nose of the Kremlin.
The operation was the brainchild of Swiss-born art collector Francesca Thyssen-Bornemisza, founder of the Museums for Ukraine support network, and her friend, Ukrainian art historian Konstantin Akinsha, who dreamed up the idea after“We wanted to act as a protector of these works that are extremely unique and rare, but also to do it by celebrating the value of Ukraine’s immense legacy that has been completely forgotten and appropriated by Russia over the last decades,” said Ms...
Then came another surprise. The convoy was stopped in the western city of Lviv after another Russian attack. When they reached the Polish border, it was closed because a stray shell had crossed onto the Polish side, prompting fears the war could escalate.
“Some of them had been in refuges. They were not trying to be heroes. They were very stoic,” she said.
