James Gray gets a sneak preview of the apartments that will house nearly 15,000 athletes competing at this summer's Olympic GamesAverage July and August highs in the French capital reach around 26°C, but heatwaves can send the mercury north of 40, as it has done twice in the last five summers.will be home to nearly 15,000 athletes, a unique community that the temporary residents often report as one of the best experiences of any Games – but extreme heat could turn that into a nightmare.
“The water is around 14°C. It’s actually pumped and injected into some stations into the ground floors of the buildings, and then it goes into the apartments.”athletes and performance staff will stay in some of the village’s 2,807 apartments at any one time during the Games, where they may also be surprised to find thermostats that only raise or lower the temperature by two degrees, rather than setting the temperature independently.
The apartments are hardly palatial, with athletes sharing rooms and sleeping in single beds, which are bedecked with Paris 2024-branded duvets, which Olympians and Paralympians can take home as a souvenir. Otherwise, these “homes from home” are deliberately sparse. The colour scheme is overwhelmingly beige, from the pavements made of seashells to the caramel apartment blocks that rise up to 10 storeys high over Saint-Ouen-sur-Seine, the post-industrial quarter a stone’s throw from the Stade de France and just over four miles from the Eiffel Tower. In the 1940s and 1950s, all the electricity for Paris’s historic Metro system was generated in a plan which, now disused and repurposed, forms part of the village and will become an office block after the Games.
