Kim McGuinness wants to be Labour's new 'Queen of the North'. First she must beat Jamie Driscoll, ex Labour mayor for the North of Tyne
“People need to know that there is more to the North than Manchester,” says McGuinness, as she discusses Andy Burnham’s ‘King of the North’ moniker. She would rise to become a city council cabinet member and increasingly viewed politics as her full time occupation. “What we hear on the doorstep is that people want a change,” she says. “Keir goes down quite well and people think that he is more trustworthy than Rishi Sunak.”
Much of the national media attention has zoned in on her main rival, Driscoll, the current North of Tyne mayor who is standing as an independent. His strategy has involved a number of high-profile events, including at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light, and attempting to outflank Labour on the left, with promises of full employment and a green new deal and a “total transport network” that includes several new rail routes.sees Driscoll he is due to speak at a hustings at Durham’s Elvet Methodist Church, a building which lines the road where the famous Miners’ Gala banner parade takes place.
Nor is it a revelation that engagement with politics is low, after the turmoil of Brexit, government sleaze and the economic shocks Covid visited on the poorer parts of the country.
