Inside the picture perfect village with a 12th century hall, thatched cottages and thriving independent shopsThere are not many villages or towns that you can walk around in 2024 and feel as though you've been transported back in time.
On Botanic Road, in the village's main thoroughfare, sees a preservation order imposed to protect the buildings and heritage of Churchtown. This is evident with thatched cottages, stocks dating from 1741 and a 12th Century building, Meols Hall.The latter is the home of the Hesketh family who have looked after Churchtown for centuries. In more modern days, the village is thriving with independent shops, including plant shops, antique shops and bars, restaurants and pubs.
Even the village's conservative club boasts its heritage, showing it used to be an old school and had many other uses and lives before its life now. There's also an aviary in the Botanic Gardens, perfect for children and people of all ages to get up, close and personal with nature - completely free of charge.
