Leaked WhatsApp messages show backbench Tory MPs heaping praise on Rishi Sunak for 'seizing the agenda'
The Prime Minister was grilled on his announcement that he would beand other net zero measures, but defended the move claiming he was “absolutely confident in our position”.
Another said he was “seizing the agenda” and that policy announcements like this were “just what we need from the PM”. This included a relative who usually voted Conservative or UKIP getting in touch to say he’s “loving it”, while a female Tory peer who had been “despondent” in recent years told him she felt “we’re now making the news and heading in the right direction”.
Former environment minister and prominent green campaigner Zac Goldsmith called for a snap general election to test the Prime Minister’s mandate for overhauling the Government’s plans. Former Tory energy minister Chris Skidmore said that “delaying carefully planned and proportionate net zero measures will only cause economic pain and cost householders more. We cannot afford for ‘not zero’ to damage businesses and jobs”.
