Palace sources cite an inability to manage the fragile confidence of modern players as one of the reasons for popular Vieira's downfall
There was a huge sense of reluctance from Palace chairman Steve Parish to sack Vieira, having been impressed as he led the club to a 12th-place finish last season, with a longing glance at the European places for a brief period half-way through, as well as the FA Cup semi-finals, all while playing highly entertaining football.
Even now, there remains the nagging feeling that had Parish held on for just a little longer, things could have turned around. In Vieira’s last 10 Premier League games Palace lost and drew five times, yet they only conceded a maximum of one goal each game, apart from the two against Manchester United.
As always in football there are many ways of looking at things, of weighing up the numbers to assess progression, and no shots on target in three Premier League games during that period lends a different light to it all.if perhaps one of Vieira’s weaknesses was that he didn’t quite understand that footballers weren’t as self-motivated as he was in his playing days.
