A Fifa study of over 406,987 social posts across Twitter and Instagram targeting players and coaches for the Euro 2020 final and Afcon 2022 final found that racism was the second most common type of abuse behind homophobia.that “without a shadow of a doubt”, things are getting worse with a year-on-year rise in discrimination incidents recorded.
Mr Burnett believes racist abuse aimed at players, staff and fans could exceed previously recorded levels as a result of inflammatory language used by politicians and an inadequate response from social media companies.
A Meta spokeswoman said: “No one should experience racist abuse, and we don’t want it on Instagram. We usually don’t disable someone’s account the first time they break our rules, because we believe people should have a chance to improve their behavior. “That doesn’t mean we don’t do anything. We remove violating comments when we become aware of them, and take stronger steps, including disabling an account completely, if someone repeatedly breaks our rules. While we haven’t been given an opportunity to review the CCDH’s report, it’s not accurate to conclude we haven’t taken action just because accounts are still live.”
