Instant Newcastle United fan/writer reaction after Nottingham Forest 1 Newcastle United 1‘So many games this season have panned out like this. More than enough chances to win the game, we get a great goal and can’t hold a lead, then by the end you are hoping they don’t nick the win.
Forest were poor, we should have come away with the 3 points, but it sums up our poor season in the league, especially away from home. On to the final home game of what seems like a very long season and hopefully a decent performance to put some smiles back on our faces. ’Considering we haven’t kept a clean sheet for two months, we needed that second goal and it just didn’t come.
‘A point isn’t too bad away at Forest but the same old issue has thwarted us. This team’s inability to hold a lead. Forest played in midweek but they were able to finish the game strongly – not good from our perspective.
Then we come to the scorer of that Forest goal. Mr Anderson. A great lad. A Geordie.
Sold off because of PSR regs. It was a great finish. That particular piece of business is now fully haunting and may do so for many years to come, as we don’t look likely to be buying him back.
‘6 minutes and 38 seconds in, the Forest fans were singing “Geordie Maradona. ” And after some of wor fans joined in, well you didn’t have to be mystic Meg to work out was about to unfold. Woltemade proving again that your standing gets elevated the more you don’t play. As he lollops around the pitch once again.
First half we bossed and Forest were all over the place at times. Great substitutions gave us the goal we deserved overall but it was inevitable that Anderson would deal that blow. ’‘So we’ve come of a bruising semi final defeat to Villa and have an injury ridden team, I didn’t fancy our chances. Injuries to key players and that defeat at Villa Park left us fragile and Eddie Howe was looking for a strong finish to the season.
We hung on in the first half and managed to get back in the game by half time. And then our lad Anderson gets on the end of his one two to get us the point that should keep us up. ’United had the better chances and took only one. The story of our season.
Our former keeper made five saves but could do nothing to deny Barnes, who capitalised on a sublime Ramsey through ball. Super subs rule OK! We bizarrely ran out of steam against opponents who had played twice since we beat Brighton last Saturday. Hall, selected at right-back, was finally made to pay when Anderson beat him to a quick pass and smashed the late equaliser past Pope.
Trippier got three minutes, Gordon, Elanga and Willock none. Wissa looked lost after replacing Osula, Woltemade did good work between the two penalty areas after a weak start and Murphy put in three excellent early crosses to no avail. A disappointing end to the game because it was Forest in the ascendancy and we didn’t have any reaction when they equalised.
’‘More points dropped unfortunately and an extra kick to have Elliot Anderson, who pretty much represents the PSR fit up, spoiling the day. A pretty rotten game and one that removes any doubt that we have failed to qualify for Europe this year.
