Waste Reduction Week runs Monday, March 4 through Saturday, March 9, with events around Fairbanks highlighting local conservation efforts.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - In an effort to teach Interior Alaskans more about their options for recycling, composting, and other sustainable practices, this week is being recognized by Green Star of Interior Alaska as Waste Reduction Week.
From a workshop on composting to a tour of a facility for recycling electronics, different organizations and businesses are coming together for the week-long series of events. Access Alaska, the Chena Tool Library, the Great Alaskan Bowl Company and Compost Fairbanks are among the entities involved.This is the first time the event has been put on, and organizers hope it’s not the last.
According to Liz Kempton with the Compost FBX program coming out of Fairbanks Soil and Water Conservation District, “We kind of felt like there’s a lot of great resources and services that exist in Fairbanks right now, including the Central Recycling Facility. We do some compost pickup in the summers.
The week culminates with a Sustainable Living Expo on Saturday, March 9th, put on by Green Star, which is planned to feature family activities and opportunities for recycling and composting.Ice Alaska moves into 3rd round of competitions
