VBQ was open two days a week inside taco shop Mariachi’s Dine-In.
This platter of barbecue, photographed Feb. 2, 2024 at VBQ in Fort Worth, is entirely vegan. The restaurant was open in January, February and March 2024 but has closed. The restaurant was selling some of the most interesting meat-free and dairy-free food we’d seen lately in Dallas-Fort Worth. Its meat-free burnt ends, served atop a waffle during brunch, resembled the look and texture of a candied piece of brisket but were made with plant-based seitan.
“When we set out to establish an experimental vegan restaurant, we knew it would be a risk,” Miller said. “There’s only so much risk we can assume.” She cited high labor costs and the loss of their chef, who created the recipes, as reasons for the closure.Miller said she was glad they tried VBQ, and she plans to invite other chefs to use her kitchen as a pop-up space on Sundays and Mondays.VBQ Smokehouse was open two days a week inside of Mariachi’s Dine-In at 5724 Locke Ave., Fort Worth.
