Ferentz, the Hawkeyes’ head coach since 1999, will sit out the Aug. 31 season-opener vs. Illinois State. Iowa wide receivers coach Jon Budmayr, a former special assistant to Ferentz, is also suspended for the same game. Ferentz’s suspension is reportedly related to the recruitment of starting quarterback Cade McNamara, who came to Iowa from Michigan prior to the 2023 season. McNamara — who led the Wolverines to the Big Ten title in 2021 — committed to the Hawkeyes just three days after entering the transfer portal in December 2022.McNamara is not the only recent Iowa transfer recruit about whom questions have been raised.
Ferentz, 69, is 196-116 in 26 seasons at Iowa. The Hawkeyes, who went 10-4 in 2023, are ranked No. 25 in the Associated Press preseason poll.
