Iowa Supreme Court will decide next week on state's ban of most abortions

The Iowa Supreme Court, like the U.S. Supreme Court, is coming to the end of its term this week.

Like the high court in Washington, DC, the high court in Des Moines has a landmark ruling to make.

Last summer, Gov. Kim Reynolds ordered a one-day special session so Republicans could pass a nearly identical bill after the fall of Roe. It would ban most abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, a period when most women do not know they are pregnant. Six weeks does not mean it has been six weeks since fertilization.

In 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the near 50-year-old landmark Roe v. Wade decision, which legalized abortions across the country. The rare reversal of a prior ruling by the now ultra-conservative court put the issue back into the hands of the states.
