McAuley served just over seven years for the knife assault on Pauline at her Cavan home on Christmas Eve in 2014 when their two young sons were in the house. The one-time Provo terrorist first hit the headlines in 1991 following an infamous jail-break from Brixton prison in London. The gang, who wore balaclavas and were armed with military style guns, including a Kalashnikov automatic rifle, rammed the two detective’s unmarked blue Ford Mondeo before firing 14 rounds into the vehicle, killing Det McCabe almost instantly.
