Following recent clashes between Israel and Hezbollah, Iran finds itself in a precarious position. While its ideological stance demands retaliation against Israel, its struggling economy necessitates rebuilding ties with the West for sanctions relief. ' Iran has very few good options and knows an escalation will seriously doom its chances of getting sanctions relief,' one expert tells i Hezbollah denied responsibility for the incidents. But Israel blamed the Lebanon-based Shia group, and claimed revenge with assassination of senior Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr in southern Beirut a few days later.

Another way to speed a thaw in relations will be Tehran halting its progress toward building a nuclear weapon, a concern recently highlighted by Iran’s expansion of its bomb-proofsites. When Rafael Grossi, the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, visited Iran in April, he said the regime was justthinks Iran “is seriously interested in pursuing agreements with the West that could help it lift sanctions and this is indeed a priority for it”.

Ayman Safadi, the Jordanian foreign minister, blamed Israel for the attack on Hezbollah pagers and said the Jewish state was “pushing the entire region toward the abyss of regional war”, which “would have drastic ramifications not only for the region, but for the world”.quoted three US officials as saying. “It was a use it or lose it moment,” one of the officials said.

“This has humiliated Hezbollah and it’s a major blow to its operational capability with so many people, including major figures, losing fingers and eyes. But it was presumably a means to an end. What was the end? What would be the point of having this secret operation in place if there wasn’t a plan to follow up with something?”
