Ladies, we have a problem. I’m referring to Kevin Keegan, who scored an own goal this week with some helpful comments about

“I don’t like to listen to ladies talking about the England’s men’s team at the match because I don’t think it’s the same experience. I have a problem with that,” Keegan told the audience of about 250 people. You only need to consider its origins – meaning “mistress of a household”, “wife of a lord” or “bread-kneader” in Old English – to understand that it’s well past its use-by-date. It clings to harmful notions of what a woman should be: feminine, demure and “ladylike”, with all the judgement that carries about our behaviour, pastimes and dress.
