Manchester Airport has a long-standing reputation for hauntings, with reports dating back decades. Explore the chilling accounts of staff encounters, theories about the airport's history, and the lingering debate about whether the airport is truly haunted.

Manchester Airport has long been rumored to be haunted, with tales of ghostly encounters dating back to the 1970s. A decade ago, the Manchester Evening News (M.E.N.) unearthed archive documents revealing a string of staff reports describing eerie apparitions. The sightings primarily concentrated around Terminal Three 's departure gates, which opened in 1989. The most common account involved a spectral male figure, dressed as an airman, wandering through the gates before vanishing into thin air.

One worker even claimed to have seen a figure wearing a pilot's hat enter the toilets at night, only to hear the door shut behind them. Upon investigation, they found the toilets empty, despite no arriving or departing flights at the time. The motion-sensitive lights hadn't been triggered either. Other staff reported hearing slamming doors, but upon checking, they discovered empty rooms with the lights off. These chilling accounts led some employees to avoid Terminal Three alone after dark, consumed by fear. One chilling letter from a former airport worker, dated 1971, described an encounter with an 'old man' whom he believed to be the ghost of a night watchman killed years earlier. Since the M.E.N.'s 2011 article, speculation about the ghostly goings-on at Manchester Airport has only intensified. Terminal Three stands on the grounds of former RAF Ringway, a Royal Air Force base during World War II. The hangars and buildings housed the 613 City of Manchester Squadron, leading some to theorize that this historical connection could explain the airman apparition sightings. Other theories range from a farmer who once owned the land to even the restless souls of Roman soldiers, purportedly seen on runways in full battle attire. At the time of the initial article, a Manchester Airport spokesman acknowledged the airport's folklore, stating, 'We are often reminded of the myths and legends attached to some of the terminals – and many of the people who work here have had their own experiences.' They even participated in a radio show with a psychic who affirmed the presence of spirits roaming the hallways. Recent years have seen former airport workers sharing their own experiences on social media, adding fuel to the fire. Some refer to the ghost as 'Roger,' while others recount numerous chilling stories from their time at the airport. However, not everyone is convinced. Some maintain they've worked countless night shifts in Terminal Three without encountering anything paranormal, while others scoff, attributing the only 'spirits' to the duty-free shops. Manchester Airport, initially called Ringway, officially opened on June 25, 1938, welcoming just 7,600 passengers in its first 14 months. However, with the outbreak of World War II in 1939, the airport transformed into a vital wartime engineering hub, manufacturing aircraft for Fairey Aviation and Avro. Three new runways and ten hangars were added, along with training facilities for over 60,000 parachutists. Terminal 2 was opened by Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, in 1993, while Terminal 3 (then known as Terminal A) was inaugurated by Princess Diana in 1989
