BBC's Best Interests is an impossible yet compelling drama
is everything you'd expect from a Jack Thorne drama – and we mean that as the highest compliment., the award-winning writer is far from afraid of tackling weighty, emotive and important subjects. His knack for provoking emotion in his audiences is proven by that track record, andtarring Michael Sheen and Sharon Horgan, the four-part fictional series follows a couple who are truly facing one of the hardest realities that any parent could face.
Sheen and Horgan elevate the source material with two powerhouse performances as Andrew and Nicci. Their characters each take a different stance on what is the best route forward, and this is also illustrated in the ways in which they handle the emotional weight of their circumstances. Andrew often shuts down, not able to articulate his feelings let alone validate those of the people around him. In contrast Nicci is busying herself with the fight, placing her role as mother and advocate above all else.
But the love they each have for their daughter – and the wish to prioritise what is in her best interests – is fully palpable, and underpins every scene., is another standout, playing the role of Marnie's older sister Katie. She is going through a lot of normal teenage stuff, but her parents' focus is obviously fixed elsewhere much of the time.
Noma Dumezweni also makes an impression as the doctor in charge of Marnie's treatment; far from being presented as the 'bad' side, she injects nuance and balance to the highly emotive subject while walking the line between professionalism and vulnerability as a medical professional.And, of course, there's Niamh Moriarty as Marnie herself.
