Crysencio Summerville, signed by West Ham from Leeds, has faced challenges adapting to the Premier League. Despite initial expectations, he has struggled for consistent playing time and made a limited impact. Former footballer Cedric van der Gun suggests that Summerville might be physically challenged by the demands of the Premier League.
When Crysencio Summerville arrived at West Ham United from Leeds United in the summer, there was optimism that he could take the Premier League by storm. The Dutchman was named as the Championship Player of the Year last season after scoring 19 goals and adding nine assists in 43 matches for Leeds. It seemed almost inevitable that he would leave, however, after the Whites failed to gain promotion back to the top-flight.
Although there was talk that Summerville, 23, might end up staying at Elland Road, he left in August to join West Ham for a fee of just over £25million plus add-ons. He made his debut on the opening day of the season as a second-half substitute in a 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa. Unfortunately for Summerville, he has struggled for regular game time at the London Stadium. In fact, the former Netherlands Under-21s international has started just six Premier League matches since his switch to the Hammers, featuring a further 12 times off the bench. Summerville has scored just one goal for West Ham. That came, ironically, during a 2-1 win over Leeds' bitter rivals Manchester United in October. He has one assist to his name, setting up Niclas Fullkrug's late consolation when the Hammers were beaten 3-1 up at Leicester City. It's safe to say Summerville's time at West Ham has been a disappointment so far and ex-Ajax and Borussia Dortmund winger Cedric van der Gun believes that the Dutchman may be struggling physically with the step up to the Premier League this season. 'He was brought in for a considerable amount, but that applies to several players there,' he told the broadcaster Viaplay. 'Fullkrug, for example. He actually disappoints me more than Summerville.
