There are those who believe it gives kids a level playing field by reducing inequality and sets a standard of what pupils can expect when they enter the workplace.
What I'm struggling most to get on board with is the number of pedantic rules that schools are issuing these days. And quite often the way these incidents of non-compliance are dealt with seems bizarre in itself - usually putting pupils in isolation for the day, or sometimes suspended until the uniform is corrected. One girl was recently forced to cut the bows off her socks, leaving her to walk round with holes for the rest of the day.
I'm not naive enough to think that these steps aren't sometimes necessary, especially in high school where teachers face an almighty battle with increasing levels of bad behaviour. But I don't think this one size fits all approach is working.
