Is this World Cup finally marking the end of the Wag culture? ⚽ ✍️ jess_barrett writes for ipaperviews

The England team’s wives and girlfriends are keeping the focus on football, but I miss Wag culture

As we’re deprived of seeing endless social media updates and paparazzi images of the women, the message is clear: it’s about the game, not about usEngland’s Jack Grealish embracing girlfriend Sasha Attwood following World Cup match between Wales and England , the stands at Al Rayyan’s Ahmed bin Ali Stadium in Qatar were filled with their family, friends and girlfriends, cheering them on.

This could barely be more different from the now notorious 2006 World Cup in Baden Baden, when the likes of Victoria Beckham, Cheryl Cole, Coleen McLoughlin and Carly Zucker, newly crowned by the tabloids that summer as the “Wags”, descended on the sleepy town for a month of champagne and chaos. Fake tan, fresh hair extensions, Fendi baguettes and feuds: these women had more possession of the tabloid narrative than their partners did of the ball during that tournament.

While Wag culture, all flagrant spending, 24 suitcases for a week’s holiday and head-to-toe Burberry, defined a decade, we’re seeing a new school incarnation of what it means to be romantically involved with the England team. I wonder if you can name a single “Wag” from this year’s squad? If you can’t, then that’s exactly as it should be.
