On a mudded stretch of farmland, i saw dozens of heavy-duty military vehicles lining up alongside young soldiers
A man walks next to a car destroyed in a rocket attack from the Gaza Strip in Ashkelon, southern Israel, on Tuesday soldier manning the checkpoint laughs and points 50 metres behind us. “No, there is as far as you can go.”
But the short burst of rocket fire we experienced is just a fraction of what has landed in Ashkelon in the past 24 hours. Up and down the country, WhatsApp groups that were originally set up to organise protests against the Israeli government have turned into coordination points for supplies. One, a 19-year-old grenade specialist, tells me: “This is a hard moment and we’re sad for the people who were killed.”
