The Pentagon will escalate its military support by giving Israel two Iron Dome air-defense systems, a senior defense official told The Washington Post.
Cruise missiles launched from Yemen toward Israel last week and shot down by a U.S. Navy destroyer in the Red Sea had the range to reach Israel, the Pentagon said Tuesday. Brig. Gen. Patrick Ryder, a Pentagon spokesman, estimated that the range of the missiles was about 1,200 miles. U.S.
officials have said the missiles were headed toward Israel, but they had not clarified whether they could have reached it. Houthi militants launched the salvo of low-flying munitions Thursday, defense officials have said, and the USS Carney, a destroyer, intercepted them. The Houthis and Hamas have long received training and other support from Iran.
