Vermont authorities have confirmed Israel Keyes, who died by suicide in an Alaska jail cell, as the sole suspect in the 2011 murders of Bill and Lorraine Currier. The Currier case is considered closed, but Keyes remains under investigation for other murders across the country.

Vermont 's federal prosecutor, Tris Coffin, has identified Israel Keyes as the sole suspect in the June 2011 abduction and murders of Bill and Lorraine Currier of Essex, Vermont . Coffin described Keyes as 'a force of pure evil acting at random' and confirmed that Keyes died by suicide in an Alaska jail cell on Sunday. While authorities are withholding details about Keyes' death, Coffin emphasized the tragic impact on families of potential victims who may never receive closure.

This marks the first public link between Keyes and the Curriers' deaths. Law enforcement officials chose to withhold Keyes' name until now to avoid jeopardizing investigations into other potential crimes. Authorities revealed that Keyes traveled to Vermont 18 months prior, intending to kidnap and kill someone randomly. He specifically targeted a house with an attached garage and no security measures, likely for easier escape. Chittenden County, Vermont State's Attorney T.J. Donovan shared that Keyes confessed to authorities in Alaska about breaking into the Curriers' home and executing a 'blitz attack' while they slept. He claimed to have tied up the Curriers before taking them to an abandoned farmhouse where he shot Bill Currier after he became unruly. Lorraine Currier briefly managed to escape, but Keyes caught up with her, tackled her, sexually assaulted her, and ultimately strangled her to death. Donovan expressed his conviction that Keyes is the killer, citing jailhouse confessions that included specific details about the Curriers' home and garage contents, never previously disclosed. FBI search teams also recovered a handgun stolen from the Curriers' house, discarded in a Parishville, New York reservoir, exactly as Keyes had indicated. The gun used to kill Bill Currier was also recovered from the water. Donovan stated that Keyes concealed the bodies in garbage bags at the vacant farmhouse, covered with debris. Despite an extensive landfill search in Coventry, Vermont earlier this year, the Curriers' remains have not been found. In a heartfelt statement read by Essex Police Chief Brad LaRose, the victims' relatives expressed their gratitude for the unwavering support of friends, coworkers, and strangers who have stood by them during this agonizing time. Although Coffin declared the Currier case closed, he acknowledged that Keyes is still under investigation in other states. Keyes confessed to four murders in Washington State and one in New York State while incarcerated as a suspect in the killing of 18-year-old coffee shop worker Samantha Koenig in Anchorage, Alaska. The Curriers' family statement affirmed their commitment to beginning a new chapter of healing, a sentiment echoed throughout their community
