'The evil regime made a mistake and must be punished,' said Iran's Ayatollah Ali Khamenei

'The evil regime made a mistake and must be punished,' said Iran's Ayatollah Ali Khamenei‘s “evil regime” in a televised address as tensions rose between the countries ahead of an anticipated response from Tehran to theIsrael’s foreign minister, Israel Katz, replied that Tel Aviv would respond to any attack with a strike on Iranian territory.

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, had directly threatened Israel during his annual Eid al Fitr sermon. “When they attack our consulate, it means our territory has been attacked,” he said. “The evil regime made a mistake and must be punished and will be punished.” The attack on Damascus will draw a response from Iran, with regime leaders fearing a damaging loss of deterrence if they do not act, said Dr Hamidreza Azizi, an Iran foreign policy specialist at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs.

Iran could strike back without targeting Israel itself through an embassy abroad, as a senior Iranian official warned last week, but this would risk drawing a third party into the conflict. Tehran could seek to limit escalation by striking a target in the Golan Heights, which is occupied by Israel but internationally recognised as Syrian territory, Dr Azizi believes.

“The Iranians are not interested in a regional war because they still want a nuclear deal with the US and their money that is frozen in Western banks.”
