Liberal senator Jane Hume has criticised Foreign Minister Penny Wong’s calls for the establishment of a standalone Palestinian state, saying it marks a shift away from Australia’s bipartisan position on Israel and Palestinian territories and would be seen as a win for Hamas. In a speech at the ANU’s National Security College on Tuesday, Wong said the establishment of a standalone Palestinian state was the only way to end hostilities with Israel.
The foreign minister outlined the government’s vision for Palestine’s recognition as a country in the face of longstanding violence which has gripped the Middle East for decades. Hume said Wong’s a position was “putting statehood ahead of security and it will be seen as a win for the terrorists”. “Quite frankly, we cannot have a two-state solution that doesn’t guarantee the confidence and security of both states to exist and at the moment that simply doesn’t exist,” she told Seven.
