‘PRECISE OPERATION.’ A Palestinian woman reacts as she sits amidst the rubble of Gaza’s Al-Shifa hospital after the Israeli military withdrew from the complex housing the hospital on Monday amid the ongoing battles between Israel and the Hamas militant group. The Israeli army launched its operation on March 18 and has described it as a ‘precise’ one targeting Hamas militants it accused of operating from the complex.
A doctor told AFP more than 20 bodies had been recovered and that some had been crushed by withdrawing vehicles. During the Oct. 7 attacks, Palestinian militants also seized around 250 Israeli and foreign hostages. The Israel-Hamas war has devastated much of Gaza, including several health facilities, and sparked warnings of famine among the civilian population.
Tensions have risen between Israel and its chief backer the United States over the spiralling civilian death toll, and especially over Israeli threats to send ground forces into Gaza’s crowded far-southern city of Rafah.
