John Carter pleaded guilty Friday to a charge of involuntary manslaughter. He had been charged with her murder.
The maximum penalty for involuntary manslaughter is three years in prison, some say it's not enough, but Butler County Prosecutor Mike Gmoser stood by the decision."I know he was guilty of what he pled guilty to today. That's my rule and that's what I did," Gmoser said.
"It really doesn't sound like justice, in my opinion," Crisp said. "It sounds like the penalty is far less than what it should be considering the nature of all of the crimes involved.""As far as I'm concerned, you need to stay the hell out of it, that's what I have to say about that. Justice was done for Katelyn Markham, and justice was done for her father," said Gmoser.
Gmoser said they were prepared to move forward with the murder trial, but based on the evidence they had, he wasn't sure how a jury would have reacted. He said there was no confession, no photo of a crime in progress, DNA, or fingerprints. He said if he could say anything to Katelyn, it would be that they finally found someone to accept responsibility for her death.
