Damien Hardwick has called on the game’s decision makers to make faster calls on holding-the-ball decisions as it was putting players’ health and safety at risk.
Triple premiership coach Damien Hardwick has called on umpires to start making faster calls on holding-the-ball decisions because he believes they are putting players in dangerous positions that compromise their health and safety.
“So we’ve got to look at it, we’ve got to coach it. I know it’s incredibly hard, but you know, from a players’ health and well-being point of view, we’ve just got to make sure, for the benefit of the game, that we look after the players.” Hardwick said the Andrew-Curnow incident should have been a free kick, or at least resulted in the umpire blowing the whistle for a ball-up.“It’s hard, look, the game is, there is a reason I sit up in the coach’s box. I don’t want the umpire’s job because it is that bloody tough,” he said.
“But we’ve got to look at it and make sure we can sit there and look after the players’ health and safety.” “I don’t say that often, but we’ve got some things to follow up because either, clearly, we’re not getting it right, or we are educating it wrong,” the Carlton coach said.
