The soaring gothic arches of a nave and the low strobe-bedecked ceilings of a nightclub might not at first seem similar. Likewise the solemn choral utterings and the overamplified electro beats don’t immediately appear likely playlist neighbours. However, musically speaking, they are very much of the same stable and have similar functions: providing space for a communal action that still leaves space for personal expression.
The two Italian producers of Gala’s track obviously understood the importance of simultaneously holding the listener still. Texture isn’t something that gets discussed much in pop music but here it shows its power. The high wavering pedal sound has a great chasm beneath it inhabited only by the electro-beat pulsing like a nervous heartbeat. All that’s left in between is our thoughts, our expectations and our sense of trepidation.
