England Women’s captain Leah Williamson reveals she had to defy endometriosis at this summer’s European Championships
England Women’s captain Leah Williamson has revealed she had to defy endometriosis at this summer’s European Championships.along with her fellow Lionesses in July, but it turns out it wasn’t just on the pitch battles that she had to face. The Lionesses skipper was one of the stand out players at the tournament that was played on home soil, with her starting every match as Sarina Wiegman’s side captured the hearts of the nation.
But what fans didn’t know was Williamson, who was such a leader and role model for the rest of the squad in the competition, was also living in fear about her endometriosis which she was diagnosed with last year. Many women struggle with the condition, which involves tissue similar to the lining of the womb growing in other places such as the ovaries and fallopian tubes, causing intense, and often debilitating, pain.“I was like, it cannot happen [a flare up during the Euros],” the Arsenal defender told. “It [not being able to play] is a big fear when you get to a tournament not injured. ”
The 25-year-old suffered a head injury shortly before the Euros, and this had an impact on her condition, causing her to suffer a bout of particularly acute menstrual pain. “I had a concussion which they say can really impact your next period and it was bad – like, really bad,” she said.
