Stefan Cooke and Jake Burt are debuting womenswear for SS23 at London Fashion Week.
During a weekend trip away to Edinburgh for Burt’s birthday, the duo was inspired by treasures scored while charity shopping – a usual holiday activity for the couple – particularly ’80s silk bomber jackets, sports tops and denim. Also on the moodboard? Etchings from the court of Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II, which they stumbled across in the Printmaking in Prague exhibition at the British Museum.
A standout look includes a panelled denim skirt and top set that’s inspired by a gambeson , but the dresses adorned with taffeta bows using a technique found on an old Victorian jacket are equally striking.There are upcycling moments – a design approach the designers have been taking since their inaugural collection in 2019 – within the womenswear also worth mentioning, such as crystal sequins stitched onto charity shop T-shirts with added warrior skirt details.
