When the designer realised there was nowhere in Paris serving ‘real’ Greek coffee, he decided to open Yorgaki –Parisian location for Greek food, Greek drinks, Greek magazines, Greek toothpaste, and naturally, traditional sand-cooked coffeeVisual identity for Yorgaki, designed by Yorgo Tloupas, Paris

Yorgo Tloupas – co-founder of Paris-based design studio Yorgo&Co – has opened what’s being billed as the city’s first traditional Greek café. The multidisciplinary creator has had a hand in everything, from the graphic identity, to the menu, to the design of the space, which also plays host to the studio’s creative base.

On a mission to squeeze as much street light as possible into the L-shaped space, the ground floor former school was completely gutted. A long strip of LED light directs visitors through a narrow 105 square metres, past CEO Tloupas’ office, to the meeting room which serves also as the studio’s photography studio.

Tloupas designed and commissioned the furniture, around a modular and flexible system, to account for the limited footprint. All the work desks, for example, are custom-built by the local designer Eloi Schultz, with cable-hiding features, and a secondary level to store ‘designer mess’, as the studio puts it. Tloupas himself designed the entrance furniture: a couch, coffee table and stools made of parallel strips of wood held together by thin metal rods.

Alongside the bubbling Ibrik coffee, which is brewed in copper pots over hot sand, authentic Greek delicacies are the order of the day. Enjoy rustic flavours served with delightfully little finesse: Tzatziki, Melitzanosalata, Taramasalata, Greek Choriatiki salad , marinated anchovies and Kalamata olives. Even the WiFi code is ‘FetaLife’. We’re on board. §
