Despite the presence of a game-changing force in Victor Wembanyama, the San Antonio Spurs’ defense remains dead last in the NBA

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich can’t cop to being a fly on the wall in Minnesota’s coaches meetings over the past few seasons. He doesn’t know word-for-word what was said in any of the Timberwolves’ myriad film sessions. Even so, Popovich can guess the first step Timberwolves coach Chris Finch took to build what has become the most fearsome defense in the NBA. “They’ve finally committed to it,” Popovich said.

“We have got to do a better job of being in two places at once,” McDermott said. “Covering for each other, communicating and just the whole overall urgency has to step up.” In that, the Spurs’ defensive woes are somewhat head-scratching, given they boast one of the few players in the league actually capable of being in two places at once. Wembanyama, the 7-foot-3 rookie, can cover much of the floor by himself with his 8-foot wingspan. His 23 total blocks rank second in the NBA.
