Floods, theft and clean-ups can easily displace records needed for jobs and housing.
Director of Community Engagement and Communication for Think Dignity Merlynn Watanabe discusses how documents are stored and secured at the Think Dignity office space in San Diego, CA. Inside a two-story office building in Kearny Mesa, through an entrance that requires a key card and past two more locked doors, sit six filing cabinets.
“Having documents, it isn’t just to get access to services,” said Merlynn Watanabe, Think Dignity’s director of community engagement and communications. “It’s to remind themselves that they are human.” Staffers manning those booths can also help residents request missing documents. This may include records from around the country, such as out-of-state birth certificates, although nonprofit leaders said they likely wouldn’t be able to assist with immigration files.
The Regional Task Force on Homelessness is paying the program’s $320,000 annual cost, and that funding covers fees that might come with requesting new records as well as the salaries for three staffers dedicated just to this. On Friday afternoon, on a dead-end street a little ways away from the Kearny Mesa building, several aging vehicles sat under ficus trees. Plastic bins were stacked next to one. Blankets hung over the doors of another.
