Starmer has frittered away public goodwill towards Labour to leave a nightmare for Reeves
The problem for Reeves is it’s not clear her party has the will to wear difficult decisions – and it didn’t end well for Keir Starmer’s then chief of staff. But with Gray now gone , now it’s
The decision of three members of the Cabinet to write to Keir Starmer this week to raise concerns over the suggested departmental cuts by the Treasury shows that this is not a happy ship. What’s more, some of the mooted tax rises – from freezing thresholds to raising employers’ national insurance – will give the Tories plenty to go on the attack with as they try to accuse Labour of reneging on manifesto commitments.
So, why then do swathes of the Labour Party not seem ready to be disciplined in return? Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves’s problem is that just over 100 days in to their Government, the goodwill is gone. Instead, that time has been dominated with Labour turmoil and the Tories are now neck and neck in the polls with Labour. That suggests that the approach of “bring out the dead” and blame the Tory inheritance for the Government’s woes is yet to convince voters.
