children are heartbreakingly forced to make their own way in an uncaring, often racist world without the protection of adults
. They pretend to be siblings, and find that they become their own real sort of family through the hardships they face, from finding work as exploited drug runners to the threat of sexual assault. A scene where the two sing and scheme together is particularly poignant, but the film is smart in not over-egging the relationship: it’s an instinctive and lovely one, but there’s no time for sentiment.
The film-makers spent time in refugee camps and deep discussions with psychiatrists and other professionals to better– one very real for countless minors across the EU, and one which is all-too-easily horribly taken advantage of. This is an angry – even polemical – film which sets out to shake up any complacency on a viewer’s part. Keep your popcorn fare, we are told, and pay attention to the world.
