'It's inhumane': NYS teachers push for cooler classrooms in distressing heat testimonials

A child's body temperature rises three to five times faster than an adult's, which is why NYS lawmakers and NYSUT are pushing for new legislation.

Educators from across New York State provided their experiences with sweltering classroom temperatures with NYSUT for its "Overheated: Excessive Classroom Heat" report. “It was 87 degrees in my classroom today. I should not have to say any more than that. It is torturous and inhumane to expect children and humans to function in a room of that temperature. Please do something.”

This is just one of many testimonials from teachers, students and parents across New York state on excessive heat in the classroom. New York State United Teachers , the state's teachers' union, recently put out a report called "Overheated: Excessive Classroom Heat," which includes these testimonies as well as research on how hot classroom temperatures
