'Madness': Perth Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas blasts city's trading hours for not reflecting its 'international destination' status marketed by WA state govt

"We are a bigger, more sophisticated city than that now. To think that stores like this in the heart of our city on a Sunday morning, have queues out the front and onto the mall of people waiting for this store to open," he told Sky News Australia. "What's the point of marketing ourselves as an international destination making great fanfare about direct flights from London, Rome or Paris?" Mr Zempilas said.

"If we can increase the foot traffic through the city, there's a lot of benefits for the city. There's increased public safety - because when you've got more people around, people feel safer." "Look, I think historically we've sort of pinned it as being a common day and there's obviously a high degree of Christian observance of people going to church," Mr Harris said.

"But the reality is that when hours are extended, the existing workforce has spread more thinly. Anyone who compares their supermarket experience today to 10 years ago … There's a lot more automated checkouts, lower staffing levels when they go to part with their money.
