A "positive" result means that warmer water is building by Africa, and colder water is building near Indonesia. This has the effect of reducing the amount of rain and moist air coming to Australia from the north-west, increasing temperatures over parts of the country. "Negative" IOD events, as seen in 2021 and 2022, mean the cold and warm water swap sides, bringing extra rain.
